Any type of political movement takes action from all of us. The freshest young Cambodian folks from Oakland is taking actions into their own hands to bring cultural awareness and promote positive identity development in the Cambodian community. This even…t came out of a discussion about how we used be ashamed of being Cambodian. We were too young to understand that being on welfare, being poor, having parents who couldn’t speak English, being part of a refugee community, being a victim accused of welfare frauds, having a broken families, being described in research, by doctors, by authorities by everybody that we’re all a bunch of illiterate peasants (FYI these peasants are now experts in community gardening and growing their food organically)…We’re not saying that these aren’t true about our community, but understanding how this came to be will hopefully unite us, promote understanding, and compassion for ourselves and to our people.
This event is the mark of the beginning of our movement to a better Cambodian community in Oakland and hopefully it will spread to other communities.
Featuring fresh young new artist born and raise in Oakland, RJ, lyrically engaging storytelling base on life experience.

We believe Cambodian is beautiful. We believe our language is beautiful. We believe our people are resilient. We are still struggling, but we’re also making things happen. You all know our community is shattered often tainted by the poison of backstabbing people, pulling each other down. We know it’s true, but it’s not unusual or anything to be ashame of. We gotta take things into our own hands and come together as sisters and brothers. It’s our time to make a change. Come join the movement.
