Khmer Student Coalition Conference 2011

HOST : UCLA United Khmer Students and The Cambodian Family

WHAT : This year’s Khmer Student Coalition Conference will be a special collaborative effort with UCLA United Khmer Students and The Cambodian Family. We are pleased to invite you to attend this year’s conference, entitled “We Are The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For”.

Our goal this year is to build on top of previous years’ conferences. Two years ago at UC San Diego, we took a “A Look in the Mirror” to question and understand the person we are inside. Last year at UC Berkeley, we explored our history and cultural identities in “Reflections of a Shattered Past.”  Please join us as this year we build on top of these themes by fostering our leadership skills to continue making change in our communities.

Cambodia’s Khmer Arts Ensemble, The Lives of Giants

Experimental and spiritual, classical, complex and powerful—these are just a few of the words that describe the unique work of choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro. Since 2002, Shapiro has toured the world with her Khmer Arts Ensemble, dramatically expanding the repertory of Cambodian dance. In The Lives of Giants—featuring a company of 36 dancers, instrumentalists, and singers—a blind and vengeful giant wreaks havoc in the heavens. When tricked into using his ill-gotten weapon of destruction on himself, layers of elaborate deception are stripped away and his treachery is laid bare. “A gorgeous spectacle of contradictory sensations” (New York Times).
